the details in the cake.

wedding-blog-10

with the help of family and friends, the bride saw her vision through to the end.  and what a beautiful vision it was!  would you look at this colour coordination!  at the home of her in-laws, the stunning bride and groom were wed.  mother nature was kind and didn’t shed a tear all day.  by now most of you know my love of portrait photography – and sadly with that love, i often forget about all the little details that go into a wedding so i thought i’d share with you just that.  the bar (pictured above) was the cutest thing ever!  a stand alone little house if you will, where guests could walk up to the “drive-thru” window and request a drink from the bartender/family friend (pictured above) or walk inside the little building to the full bar – grab a drink, write marriage tips for the happy couple, warm up from the chilly evening air and grab sparklers for the evening.  seriously cozy and cute.

wedding-blog-11

we partied well into the evening, dancing and playing with sparklers.  the guest book was signed by candlelight, and at the end of the evening we all piled into a big yellow school bus to take us downtown to continue the festivities until our feet ached and we were all yawning from happy exhaustion.  it really was a perfect day surrounded with friends and family and copious amounts of laughter.  my heart felt very full.
congratulations katherine and andrew! xo

into the woods we went.

sitting on the couch with my feet on the coffee table i start typing these words.  a blog post that is far overdue.  hi.  hello!  how are you?  it’s been awhile.  where to even begin again.

i’m currently eating mint girl guide cookies.  the best kind if you ask me.  a friend recently told me about these samoas ones, they look mighty tasty but i guess they are region specific because i had never even heard of them. here’s a link to making homemade samoas that look far too tedious and i’d probably just end up throwing everything in a bowl, stirring and then eating it with a spoon. SO, if you know of anyone who is in the area that has a troop selling these samoas… let me know, i’d love to try them!

the mint cookies remind me of my younger days when i was apart of a troop and would have sold my own boxes of cookies to fund things like go camping.  winter camping was the coolest.  (see what i just did there. ha.)  i have this distinct memory of sitting in the snow all bundled up in my snowsuit and eating hot grilled cheese out of aluminum foil that had just come from the fire pit.

in the time that i’ve been silent on the blog, josh and i welcomed a baby boy into our family.  meet Levi.  he absolutely loves the outdoors.  we took him on his first camping trip this summer to Sandbanks Provincial Park.  have you been?  good grief is it ever gorgeous there!  i’ve long swooned over the thought of living somewhere in Prince Edward County and camping at Sandbanks for just 2 nights had me longing to just forget the city and stay.  those sandy beaches – glorious.  the hiking trails – scenic.

levi-camps1

camping this time around was different than any trip before.  this time, we were bringing a baby.  i was definitely nervous for the nights.  would he scream and wake up the entire campground?  probably.  and did he?  a little the first night.  second night barely a peep.  am i glad we did it?  you bet!  am i glad we had four extra hands to help?  COMPLETELY!!!  i’m sure we could have managed as a little family on our own, but boy was it ever helpful to have friends around to watch over the baby while you set up your tent or had your hands over the fire cooking while your significant other was fetching more wood or putting up a tarp.

such peace and calm was felt on this trip.  we can’t wait to do it again next year.  by then Levi will be walking though and it’ll be impossible to keep the sand away from his, well, everything!  any tips and tricks for babies at beaches i’m all ears!

happy weekend friends! September 30th, 2016.

high park cherry blossoms.

highpark-cherry-blossoms

come one, come all – to see the high park cherry blossoms!
it’s no joke.  EVERYONE comes to see them.  that’s what it feels like anyways.  almost like a rock concert, or july 1st fireworks, seeing the cherry blossoms is an event.  (if i can give you one suggestion, TAKE PUBLIC TRANSIT!  you’ll thank me later)

considering the blossoms are only in full bloom for a few short days, it makes sense why the hundreds of thousands of folks flock to high park to take a peek with their own eyes… er, ahem, i mean… cameras.
it’s nuts to see the amount of folks lens locked to their camera or mobile device.
for that reason, i didn’t take very many photos that day.  instead, i walked, talked, laughed and observed all that was around me.

and if you’re celebrating – happy mother’s day – wherever you are.  ^_^

the streets of montreal.

montreal-bike

there’s something about this bike – i like.

in a city where the street signs aren’t familiar and the language which shouldn’t be foreign to a canadian like me, well, it is.  the buildings aren’t blocking the sky and their bike lanes make sense, not disturbing the flow of traffic.  the fashion is all their own.  individual.  i feel as if i’ve transported to a far away place.  every street corner could be the start of a really good novel, it’s just waiting to be written.

i spent two weeks in montreal, quebec back in april.  if i hadn’t been out with a cold for the entire second week i would have wandered the streets more.  when you can’t speak the language, you feel isolated – at least, i did.  but rather than let it bother me, i embraced the alone time.  i walked just to wander.  no set agenda.  and then spent a solid 7 days resting in bed trying to fight off a cold that plagued me.

back to montreal, only for a few short days in may, work is what brought me there again.  no longer sick and no longer snow on the ground.  the vibe is immediately different.  it’s warm out – the birds are chirping and folks have started to take off the layers.  lounging in the park is where it’s at.  soak up that sun.

one more trip recently and it starts to feel familiar.  the metro is no longer confusing and i now don’t feel shy to say “merci” to the cashier at the local dépanneur.  my coworkers have inspired me to start learning french again but i’m incredibly shy about it.  we’ll see how this goes.

bon dimanche – wherever you are.

get outside.

explore-rocks-discover

i find it difficult to sit in front of a computer all day to then come home and want to do the same thing.  forgive me for being on and off with my blogging lately, but really, can you blame me?  it’s gorgeous out there!  are you taking advantage of it?  i hope you are.

sharing stories
picnics
ice cream dates
market strolling
puddle jumping
hidden treasures
balcony brunches
afternoon naps
singing on swings in the park
beers on a patio
flying kites and
candlelit nights

are a few things i suggest you do.

but if you only remember one thing – get outside, go explore, forever discover.

road tripping to nowhere in particular.

becky-car-camera

hey there.  that’s me behind the lens – taken last august on one of Josh and i’s many “let’s just get in the car and drive” trips.  also known as our “green adventures.”  we’d often take a quick look at google maps, pick a patch of green space we had yet to explore and just go.  not knowing what we’d find once we got there or what we would pass along the way.  it’s the mystery of it all that’s so exciting.  the free feeling of no set plans.

this cold weather has really put a damper on my soul.  every once in a while i’ll get a glimpse of sunshine and warmth but just as quickly as it comes, it goes away again bringing on the negative temperatures.  it’ll come.  soon enough.  i just have to keep reminding myself of this.

lately i just want to get up and go.  that’s where my heads been at.  GET ME OUTTA HERE!  to nowhere in particular.  bring along a few people who have the same agenda as i do – an agenda of nothing – who want to have a ton of fun while doing so.  sounds great doesn’t it?  i think so.  pack snacks, a map and my camera and i’m set.

road snacks like
roasted nuts
crisp apples
homemade granola & trail mix
thermos full of caffeine and mason jars full of lemonade.

so – who’s coming with me?  and where are we going?
let’s just jump in the car and go shall we.

camping.

camping

Josh and i have a couple more camping trips planned before fall knocks at our doorstep.  i have been craving the outdoors so much these past few weeks.  get me out of the office, off the computer and to…

the clean air.
the sounds of the forest.
slowly cooked food.
percolating coffee.
cuddling in sleeping bags.
telling ghost stories to the early am.

all around the campfire.

take it all in.  slowly.

what are your favourite things about camping?  if Josh and i weren’t off adventuring this weekend, you definitely would have saw me at the kinfolk art of camp cooking and grilling event in montreal.  i mean, herbal fire starters!  yes please!

new york city – my alt summit recap.

alt-nyc-room

the day came and went – oddly reminding me of my wedding.

there’s the build up, the IT’S HERE!, and then the WTF! it’s over! already! WHYYYY?!?! again! again! again!

if there was only one reason to go to alt nyc this year – it would have been for Garance Dore.

to be completely honest with you, this came as a complete shock to me because i didn’t know who the heck she was before hand.  i know – why am i even admitting that now?!  REGARDLESS – i think she is brilliant!  and beautiful. and honest. and that accent!  and… ya, you get it.  her words really struck a chord with me.  she validated that i’m allowed to be myself on this blog.  this is my site.  i can do whatever the fuck i want.  go figure!

like that.
i just swore.
did i scare you away?
no?

phew.

wow that felt great!  and you know what?  i just might do it again sometime.  because it’s my blog, and if you’re here, it’s because you want to read what i have to say.  or that’s the hope.  and if you don’t like it – well…

garance-haters

 – well said garance.  i don’t need to be tip toeing around because people might say something negatively about me or my blog.
or heck – maybe it’s that no one is saying anything on my blog!  and that’s okay too!  because grace bonney from design sponge said –

grace-quote

keenan cummings had me tearing up – kathleen keen from tate’s bake shop had sound business advice and a great outlook on what life throws at us and how we choose to react to it.  isabel kallman talked about “urgent vs. important”.  you know – the four quadrants.  it’s an old tool, but none the less – i would have to agree – they do work!  and then there was both john jannuzzi of lucky magazine and jennifer rubio of warby parker.  young and hungry to share their knowledge – i was eager to listen.  oh – and i totally want a pair of warby parker glasses now too… le sigh.  i’m a sucker for cool marketing.

other than the sponsored dinner the night before, alt nyc is only one day.  one – jam packed – day.  after the talks, networking breaks and keynotes are all over – there is a party.

a party in which… i dipped out of pretty darn fast.

i said hello to a few more fellow bloggers, grabbed a few twizzlers from candy mountain and then – got the heck outta there.  frankly – i was exhausted.  i ran (cabbed) back to my hotel to grab mohawk where we then went for dinner to carmine’s.  definitely did not realize the entire menu is family style and every darn thing on the menu serves 3-4 people – talk about leftovers!

and then – like the flood gates had been opened – i cried.

and cried – and cried and cried some more.

it felt great to release so many emotions all bottled up from the day.  i had just taken in so much.  really challenged to think about myself all day and where i want to go with my life.  i knew where some of it was coming from – the built up fear – the lack of confidence i had in myself – the lack of sleep from days leading up to.  and then there were some tears that i just couldn’t explain – but in the end – it felt great and i wasn’t beating myself up for missing a stellar party.  sometimes you just have to look after yourself.  and sometimes you’ll cry in the middle of a restaurant – but it’ll be for good reasons.

here are some of garance’s takeaways that stuck with me.

garance-words

i will always have the coulda, shoulda, wouldas from my altnyc trip – but it’s not worth getting hung up on them – instead – i will treat them as fun takeaways and i will learn from them!

so what are some of my takeaways? : )

  1. make sure you eat and keep yourself hydrated – otherwise you’ll be a cranky bitch!  and nobody wants that.
shouldn’t be hard though – the food they served us was fantastic!  tomato, basil, and mozzarella sandwiches with a balsamic reduction, roasted beets, mixed quinoa salad, blanched asparagus, green beans – raspberry custard tarts – double chocolate cookies during the breaks – i could go on. yum!
  2. bring an extra tote bag… that’s EMPTY!
for all the fun swag we got – oddly enough, nothing to carry it in – we all looked like hoarders at a yard sale.
  3. reach out to people BEFORE you go.  this will help your nervousness if you find yourself in a sea of new people because you’ll know one or two people.  i found twitter to be a great resource and taking an alt summit class here and there never hurts!
  4. and the one thing that i keep hearing over and over again – and bob mcclure said it too – get out of your own way!

i know, i know – easier said then done – but… seriously.  GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY!

get up.
walk around.
talk.
shake hands.
and hand out those business cards – otherwise you’ll just go home with as many as you came with and that’s no fun now is it?

alt-business-card-wall

until next time new york.  it was fun.
having martha stewart show up wasn’t too bad either!

the crisp and clean.

altnyc-business-cards-crisp

check out all these fancy business cards i gathered!  front and back!

also – can we just acknowledge that… i made a gif!
actually – i made three!
this is an accomplishment and maybe should be put on my resume.

blue jays baseball game – a weekend outing in toronto.

mohawk-bluejays-words skydome

take me out to the ball game,
take me out with the crowd.
buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
i don’t care if i never get back,
let me root, root, root for the home team,
if they don’t win it’s a shame,                                   (it was – sad face.)
for it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out,
at the old ball game!
– Jack Norworth

in my early childhood years i have vivid memories of my dad taking my brother and i, on weekends, to the school yard just down the road from our house and throwing some baseballs around.  we never played a full game – but we would get to swing the bat, catch the ball in our oversized mitts and pretend like we hit a home run by running all the bases.  so much fun!

in highschool i was able to go on a few field trips that brought us to a baseball stadium.  (thank you, Mr. Masters music class)  and now – in my adult years, i still get giddy heading out to a baseball game.  it’s the one time i’ve noticed that i don’t mind being in and amongst the crowd of people.
it’s the fun, rowdy atmosphere – the smell of hot dogs – the obnoxious yellers in the stands – i could go on…

but – i’d rather know – what’s a baseball memory that you have?
happy sunday – wherever you are!
